Timeline of Significant Achievements

A few career moments since 1995…

1995 - Join WWF-UK a week after graduating from Cambridge and develop the first (that we knew of) NGO-run system for monitoring corporate environmental supply chain performance.

1996 - Prepare organizational concept and proposal for what becomes the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). Move to Bristol and create environmental consultancy.

1997 - Publish first book on Business-NGO partnerships for sustainable development (with David F Murphy), commence doctoral studies.

1998 - Establish email group on Business-NGO partnerships, and concepts influence group member Georg Kell, who develops the idea of the UN Global Compact. Guest edit a journal on partnerships.

1999 - UN publish report 'Partners in Time', which introduces concept of civil regulation of business. Living in Costa Rica, Visiting Professor at UNA. Hold multi-stakeholder seminars in Costa Rica to promote improvements in working conditions: work feeds into Ethical Trading Initiative banana pilot project. Begin advising clients on social auditing.

2000 - Publish 2nd book, 'Terms for Endearment'. Establish Lifeworth, initially as a careers service. Co-organise Future Business conference. Move to Brighton and co-found Brighton Collective, to promote engagement in Global Justice Movement. Town halls meetings and protests at g8, World Bank and WTO organized. Begin column in Journal of Corporate Citizenship.

2001 -. Client portfolio expands, working with companies, intergovernmental organizations and NGOs on various aspects of sustainable development. Organise DFID funding for project, which involves bringing Nicaraguan women workers to UK and elaborates how to do participatory social auditing. Awarded Young Environmental Scholar of the Year award in Huston.

2002 - Move to Geneva. Begin UN inter-agency multi-country project on corporate responses to HIV-AIDS. Begin teaching on MAs and MBA: Visiting Fellow at Nottingham University. Launch Wisdom at Work.

2003 - UN report on HIV/AIDS published and receives media attention. Graduate with PhD from Bristol University. First top tier academic journal article published. Total publications now 30. Become Adjunct Professor at AUT.

2004 - UN publishes 'Barricades and Boardrooms', which is the first UN paper on counter-globalisation. Introduces concept of capital accountability.

2005 - help WWF to develop systems change orientation of One Planet Business programme.

2006 - 5th Lifeworth Annual Review published, with support from Nike, and is downloaded 10000 times. Launch CSR Geneva. Join WWF as Senior Strategic Advisor. Partnership email groups merged into new resource. New website and blog launched. UN publishes report on NGO Accountability.
