Compulsory reporting

Reporting is one area where there was growing steam for regulatory reform to promote corporate citizenship. In June, the European Parliament passed a resolution stating that companies should be required to supply information on the social and environmental impact of their operations. The resolution treats corporate social responsibility as a voluntary concept, but suggests to some that the creation of a comprehensive EU framework on corporate social responsibility, in line with similar legislation in Denmark, the Netherlands and France, is not far away.

In the UK, which some regard as ahead in debates on corporate responsibility, only 79 of the top 350 companies produced substantive reports on their environmental performance by the end of 2001. Craig Bennett of Friends of the Earth UK said: 'We need a new law to oblige companies to report on their environmental performance, to a common standard.' His organisation is part of the Corporate Responsibility (CORE) Coalition, which also involves the non-governmental organisations Amnesty International UK, CAFOD, the New Economics Foundation and Save the Children UK. The CORE Coalition is asking the UK government to require man-datory economic, environmental, financial and social reporting.

Perhaps it is from these types of initiative that new reporting frameworks will be proposed, which address the political dimensions of corporate activities—such as their lobbying, tax and industrial location strategies?
