Teaching

My approach to teaching combines both theory and student-centred learning. I communicate in clear terms that relate theories and research findings to real situations and the role and power of students themselves. I provide a full list of units that I teach, and readings, resources and slides for current students

My teaching experience includes:

  • design and delivery of 10 unit module on 'Managing Stakeholder Relations' for University of Nottingham's MA in CSR
  • unit on business ethics at University of Nottingham's MBA in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
  • design of MBA half Module 'Organisations in Context' for University of Bath
  • guest lectures at University of Geneva, AUT and Haute Ecole de Commerce.

I supervise a PhD student at AUT, focusing on business-government relations, and advise other doctoral students at AUT and Nottingham. I particularly enjoy supervising PhD students, given my interest in how our values and aspirations influence our methodology and our orientation to and use of theory.

I have spoken on sustainable development and the relations between business and civil society at conferences around the world, including: Waikato University, New Zealand, 2004; Academy of Management, Denver, 2002, Seattle, 2003; Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, 2001; Global Responsibility Founding Forum, Monaco, 2000; FUNDE 'Innovacion Tecnologica y Agricultura Conferencia', San Salvador, 1999; Royal Institute for International Affairs (Chatham House) 2000; IOEU, Hannover, June 1999; International Society for Third Sector Research (ISTR) Conference, Geneva, 1998, Dublin 2000; Peoples Summit, Birmingham, May 1998; UNRISD, Costa Rica, 1997, Geneva, 2004.

Jem led a thought-provoking week on corporate responsibility that challenged us to ask 'why' as well as 'how', and explored the challenges of lower income countries, including our need to transform the systemic injustices of current forms of globalization.
